What if the key to proving life once existed on Mars could lie in mud so old it’s almost alien — today, we delve into mysterious Martian mudstones that may carry the strongest biosignature evidence yet. These mudstones contain organic carbon and unusual textures—iron phosphates, iron sulfides, nodules and reaction fronts—that may represent potential biosignatures shaped by redox chemistry. In this video we analyze the new Nature study by Joel Hurowitz et al., explore the ancient surface environmental conditions on Mars, and discuss what evidence would be required to confirm biological origins.
