Recent activities at Kīlauea Volcano's Upper East Rift Zone have not led to an eruption, but there have been significant seismic activities and ground deformations. Within a 24-hour period, 15 earthquakes were recorded beneath the summit, and 99 in the Upper East Rift Zone, at shallow depths of 0 to 4 kilometers. Minor summit inflation was detected, but no significant inflation or deflation was noted in the Upper East Rift Zone. Sulfur dioxide emissions at the summit were measured at 65 tonnes per day. The middle and lower East Rift Zone and the Southwest Rift Zone showed low seismicity and ground deformation. Gas monitoring near Puʻuʻōʻō reported negligible sulfur dioxide emissions. From July 22 to July 25, 2024, over 1,500 earthquakes, including 30 of magnitude 3 or greater, indicated magma intrusion between Pauahi Crater and Maunaulu, extending possibly to Makaopuhi crater. This phase has concluded, but the potential for further seismic swarms or intrusions remains. The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory continues to monitor and provide updates. Hazards include ground fractures, subsidence, rockfalls, and elevated volcanic gases, posing risks to both landscapes and human safety. No imminent eruption signs are present, but vigilance and preparedness are essential due to the volcano's dynamic nature. 1. Elsevier, a prominent academic publisher, is currently investigating the journal Geoscience Frontiers following allegations of 'pal review,' where researchers have their close associates review their work instead of independent experts. The controversy centers around M. Santosh, a highly cited researcher at the University of Adelaide, whose articles were frequently edited by his close collaborators Vinod O. Samuel and Erath Shaji—both associate editors of the journal and frequent co-authors with Santosh. This pattern, observed from 2017 to 2024, raises serious concerns about the impartiality and integrity of the peer-review process in Geoscience Frontiers. Elsevier has emphasized its commitment to upholding proper peer-review conduct and is actively looking into these allegations. This isn't the first time Santosh's work has come under scrutiny. In 2020, one of his papers was retracted from Energy Geoscience due to 'unlawful content,' although the specifics remain unclear. Additionally, a PubPeer commenter has flagged multiple instances of Santosh's frequent co-authors editing his papers in various journals, suggesting a broader pattern of potential misconduct. If these allegations are proven true, they could severely damage the reputations of the involved researchers and the journals that published their work, highlighting the need for stricter oversight and transparency in the peer-review process to prevent such conflicts of interest. The ancient Egyptians demonstrated remarkable craftsmanship in drilling and carving granite, one of the hardest materials known to man. This feat has puzzled historians and archaeologists for centuries, leading to extensive research into the tools and techniques they employed. It is believed that the Egyptians utilized copper chisels and abrasive materials like sand to create precise holes in granite. Recent studies suggest they may have employed a method called "copper sawing," where copper blades set with abrasive sand were used to cut through the stone, showcasing their advanced skills and ingenuity. Exploring the techniques of ancient Egyptian granite drilling not only highlights the sophistication of their craftsmanship but also provides valuable insights into their technological achievements. The precision displayed in their work, such as the impressive eight-inch diameter holes found at the Temple of Karnak, continues to astonish researchers today. Understanding these methods enriches our knowledge of ancient civilizations and underscores the incredible capabilities of humanity's ancestors, inviting us to marvel at their ingenuity and determination. Recent discoveries of ancient plant fossils in Iceland, dating back to the Miocene Epoch approximately 15 million years ago, have captivated scientists and enthusiasts alike. Found primarily in the northwest region, these fossils include a diverse range of botanical remnants such as leaf impressions, carbonized remains, pollen grains, and lignite coal. The presence of such a rich variety of plant life on an isolated volcanic island raises intriguing questions about how these species arrived there. Some researchers propose the idea of "stepping stone" islands that facilitated plant migration, while others challenge this theory due to a lack of supporting evidence. The similarities between the Icelandic fossils and plant species found in North America and Europe from the same geological period suggest complex ancient land connections and migration patterns. For geologists, these fossils serve as valuable time capsules that provide insights into past climates and ecosystems, enhancing our understanding of Iceland's geological history. As research continues, the excitement surrounding these findings grows, promising to uncover more about the island's verdant past and the broader implications for plant dispersal and Earth's geological evolution. Kīlauea volcano in Hawaii has shown increased activity since its last eruption on June 3, 2024. The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) reports heightened seismic activity, with earthquake counts doubling in the past 24 hours around the summit and upper East Rift Zone. Ground deformation and sulfur dioxide emissions indicate ongoing magma accumulation beneath the surface. Between June 27 and July 1, about 1,500 earthquakes were detected, mostly below magnitude 2, but including several above magnitude 3. This activity suggests magma repressurization, consistent with Kīlauea's historical behavior. While the volcano's future remains uncertain, HVO has intensified monitoring efforts, deploying temporary webcams and gas monitoring stations. The ongoing unrest underscores the need for continued vigilance and preparedness, as Kīlauea's dynamic nature poses potential risks to nearby communities[1].
