Kīlauea volcano in Hawaii has shown increased activity since its last eruption on June 3, 2024. The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) reports heightened seismic activity, with earthquake counts doubling in the past 24 hours around the summit and upper East Rift Zone. Ground deformation and sulfur dioxide emissions indicate ongoing magma accumulation beneath the surface. Between June 27 and July 1, about 1,500 earthquakes were detected, mostly below magnitude 2, but including several above magnitude 3. This activity suggests magma repressurization, consistent with Kīlauea's historical behavior. While the volcano's future remains uncertain, HVO has intensified monitoring efforts, deploying temporary webcams and gas monitoring stations. The ongoing unrest underscores the need for continued vigilance and preparedness, as Kīlauea's dynamic nature poses potential risks to nearby communities[1].
