Geochemical studies further highlight the secondary enrichment of REEs and vanadium in lateritic duricrusts and the significant industrial reserves of kyanite in the Supenaam Basin (Ansart et al., 2022; Vieira, 2014). Understanding the geochemistry and complex tectonics of the Motagua Suture Zone is essential for any geologist looking to master the ophiolitic belts that host these valuable resources. The Izabal Geosol is a pedostratigraphic unit defined within the Sierra de Santa Cruz ophiolitic belt, representing a case of arrested development of a wet lateritic profile (Valls, 2003a). This geological unit is composed of five pedological horizons: a gossan or iron cap, a limonitic horizon, a stoneline, a mottled zone, and a saprolitic horizon (Valls, 2002). A striking difference between these deposits and mature laterites in Brazil or Australia is the presence of up to 30% magnetite within the saprolitic horizon, indicating a relatively young age for the laterite formation (Valls, 2019).
