NASA’s Perseverance rover has uncovered organic‐rich mudstones in Jezero Crater’s Bright Angel formation. These mudstones contain organic carbon and unusual textures—iron phosphates, iron sulfides, nodules and reaction fronts—that may represent potential biosignatures shaped by redox chemistry. In this video we analyze the new Nature study by Joel Hurowitz et al., explore the ancient surface environmental conditions on Mars, and discuss what evidence would be required to confirm biological origins.
