Recent seismic activity in Washington’s Cascade Range, especially near Mount Adams, has caught the attention of geologists. In September 2023, an unexpected surge of earthquakes occurred, with six being recorded compared to the usual one or two every few months. This phenomenon, possibly driven by both tectonic movements and glacial interactions, raises questions about the future risks of volcanic eruptions and other natural hazards in the region. This heightened seismicity underscores the need for enhanced monitoring and signals the importance of studying glacier quakes. These quakes provide valuable insights into the connection between volcanic systems and glacier movements. While no imminent volcanic eruption has been detected yet, the increased activity suggests that the region's geological behaviour is shifting, warranting further research and preparedness for potential future events.
