This study investigates the impact of Neoproterozoic snowball Earth events on sediment dynamics, focusing on the detrital zircon record within the Dalradian Supergroup of Scotland and Ireland. The research analyzes changes in sediment provenance using U-Pb detrital zircon ages and bootstrapped variance metrics. The coefficient of variance for the detrital zircon load increases stratigraphically, with changes at glaciogenic layers, suggesting intensified erosion and downcutting linked to wet-based glacial activity and postglacial sediment redistribution. The study suggests that modifications to continental weathering contributed to Neoproterozoic geochemical shifts, indicated by the loss of uranium-rich detrital zircon across glaciogenic layers and changes in average detrital zircon apparent density. The research indicates that increased dispersion in detrital zircon data is consistent with the input of varied detritus into basins during Sturtian and Gaskiers glacial events. The temporal relationship between tectonic instability, Rodinia rifting, and the influx of older detritus is linked to the deposition of glaciogenic sediments. The study interprets the influx of older detritus as a reflection of progressive erosion of basement rocks by glacial processes during globally frigid conditions. Back-steps toward lower coefficient of variance values in the aftermath of glacial episodes are interpreted to reflect fluvial erosion of ice-driven mechanical wastage, redistributing glacial material and selectively removing more friable detritus.
