Geologists have utilized an innovative high-resolution model to examine the Earth's mantle structure, leading to the discovery of unexpected zones beneath the western Pacific Ocean. These zones exhibit characteristics akin to remnants of submerged tectonic plates but are situated far from known plate boundaries where subduction typically occurs. Notably, there is no geological evidence of subduction in these specific locations, presenting a challenge to existing plate tectonic theories and prompting new inquiries into the Earth's internal dynamics.
This breakthrough was achieved through the application of full-waveform inversion, a technique that analyzes all types of seismic waves generated by earthquakes. By studying how these waves propagate through the Earth's interior, scientists can infer details about its density and composition. The findings, published in the journal Scientific Reports, suggest that our understanding of the Earth's internal processes may need to be reevaluated in light of these enigmatic structures.
