Understanding why a preprint is permanent and how it becomes a public part of the scholarly record is critical for the geological community and earth science professionals before using platforms like Research Square. This video explores how a DOI creates a citable link for early sharing and visibility, while providing a warning that these documents generally cannot be removed once they are posted. While preprints offer significant advantages such as increased citations, feedback from the global community, and a public timestamp to establish priority for exploration data or new geochemical models, they represent a lasting digital footprint that can become a professional liability if the initial science is flawed. For junior and senior geologists, utilizing services like In Review during journal submission provides transparency through a peer review timeline, yet one must remember that even if a journal rejects the manuscript, the preprint remains publicly available on the server and indexed by third parties. Although a vast majority of top journals now allow or consider preprints, it remains vital to check specific journal policies to ensure preprinting does not inadvertently preclude formal publication in your target earth science journal. By carefully navigating the permanence tradeoff, geoscientists can strategically use preprints to demonstrate productivity to funders and hiring committees while ensuring their work is truly ready for permanent public exposure.
