We explore how Compositional Data Analysis (CoDA), machine learning (ML), and artificial intelligence (AI) can transform predictive geochemistry and mineral prospectivity mapping (MPM) to overcome the inherent limitations of deterministic inversion when searching for hidden gold deposits. Traditional exploration methods often suffer from determinism, where a single geophysical inversion is given a single interpretation, effectively ignoring the geological uncertainty that leads to frequent false-positive drilling outcomes. Poorly designed protocols can result in a 1% difference in assumed versus actual ore grades, which may cost a project up to US$36 million in value or roughly half the cost of a processing plant. To address these challenges, geologists are increasingly turning to Compositional Data Analysis (CoDA) to address the "closed data" problem by treating elements as proportional sub-compositions, which serves to eliminate the danger of spurious correlations. By adopting a Popper-Bayes scientific method, the geological community can move away from merely attempting to "hit" mineralization and instead focus on using data acquisition to falsify competing geological hypotheses. Advanced AI frameworks—including Random Forests and Graph Convolutional Neural Networks (GCNs)—allow researchers to repurpose legacy and modern geochemical data to predict unknown elemental concentrations and identify geochemical anomalies with high-dimensional pattern analysis. Furthermore, integrating unconventional field techniques such as heavy mineral concentration using unlubricated condoms with high-tech tools like autonomous underground drones or muon tomography ensures that data collected is both robust and high-fidelity. Ultimately, this human-in-the-loop AI approach enhances the role of domain experts in structural geology and tectonics by focusing on creativity and process-based thinking rather than manual data processing.
