Geochemical data presents a unique challenge because it is compositional. This means the components (like elemental concentrations) are relative proportions that must sum to a constant, which violates assumptions of standard statistical methods and can lead to misleading results like spurious correlations. The GeoCoDA workflow offers a systematic approach to tackle this challenge by focusing on logratio transformations. These transformations, similar to element ratios already used in geochemistry, help properly analyze the relationships between components and reveal the underlying geochemical (mineralogical) processes.
The GeoCoDA workflow guides geologists through analyzing lithogeochemical data to recognize and validate significant processes like rock formation, metamorphism, alteration, and ore mineralization. It integrates both unsupervised learning to discover patterns and supervised learning to validate these patterns against known categories, such as different rock types or kimberlite phases. By applying methods like Principal Component Analysis on transformed data and exploring different logratio types, GeoCoDA provides enhanced insight and allows for the development of robust models to interpret and even predict geological units based on geochemistry, as demonstrated using a kimberlite dataset. Watch this video to see how GeoCoDA can transform your approach to geochemical data analysis!
