A new study published in Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems details the discovery of hydrothermal iron- and manganese-oxide deposits in the Amerasia Basin of the Arctic Ocean. These deposits formed millions of years ago through frictional heating caused by tectonic faulting, a process previously unknown in the Arctic. The minerals formed in the recent geologic past, between 8 and 4 million years ago, which is surprising as hydrothermal activity was not previously known to occur in this region during that time. The unique composition and formation of these deposits challenge existing geologic theories about the Arctic Ocean and reveal previously unrecognized complex geological processes in the region. P.
