Scientists have discovered a hidden subduction zone beneath the Pacific Ocean, providing new insights into the Earth's interior. Using seismic imaging techniques, the team was able to identify an ancient piece of seafloor that sank into the Earth's mantle approximately 250 million years ago. This discovery challenges existing theories about the Earth's structure and reveals that the material in the Earth's mantle moves much more slowly than previously thought. The findings suggest that the mantle transition zone acts as a barrier, slowing down the movement of material through the Earth's interior.
